im due to have an cystoscopy done to look into my bladder. this is a very painful procedure which is done with no anaesthetic but they do insert anaesthetic into the uretha which isnt enough. im scared of having this pain to cope with does anyone know if a sedative or something can be given ibefore the procedure takes place.i also suffer with epelepsy so the worry of having this done is very likely to bring on a fit, im really frightened can anyone put my mind at ease please.

I've had it done many many times and did not have the pain I thought I would. When they put the gel into your uretha, it really does numb the area. The most uncomfortable part of the procedure was when they fill you full of water. Even after, I felt little to no pain when going pee. If you have having a lot of pain - there is something wrong. My nurse that preps me always let the gel sit for a while and I've never had real pain - even when I was 6-months pregnant. If you've had it done before, I'd seek another doctor - If not, remember to relax and that makes it much better. I get to go in every year for the rest of my life and have it done, but I'm so glad I have the doctor and nurses I have - they are wonderful! Please feel free to contact me privately if you have any more questions.

When I had one I was advised to take 5 Advil (Do not do this without your doctor's approval).

Let your doctor know that you have epilepsy so he or she can take any necessary precautions. That may cause him/her to decide to use a sedative. This is another reason not to take the Advil without advance approval- it might interfere with the option to use a sedative.

There was discomfort and you wouldn't want it to last a long time, but it was manageable for the short period of time it lasted.

Hang in there- you'll make it.

They can give a sedative and should in light of your anxiety.

Have you actually had a cystoscopy? If so, then you may want to find a different urologist, because it shouldn't be painful, just mildly uncomfortable.

Talk to your urologist about these concerns prior to the study. If he or she dosen't help you to cope effectively, then, I would suggest finding a urologist that will. Most are very understanding, but, don't ever feel that you have to stay with a particular physician, dentist, etc., if they are uncaring or rude!!
