OS's in the old days used CLI (command line interface), so the user would have to type in commands one line at a time, such as dos and unix.
Now they use GUI (graphical user interface) like windows. This makes it much more accessable to people rather then trying to remember commands

Windows usually, or linux. It's the big old program that runs about everything on your computer. Only the built in BIOS is below it for basic instructions in the hardware.
