forgot to pay my electric bill, reason being i never get bills sent to my cafe only home address and as i have pre-paid meters at home, i never open any bills that scottish power send me, unless i think on and that this might be a cafe bill,, anyway, a guy comes in the cafe 2 weeks ago, from scottish power. wrote him a cheque for the amount owing, then this week i get a bill for this quarter plus last quarter, which i have already paid. and this must have been added vat to. but they have added the two amounts together and vatted me again,, i know the first bill is paid, so it must be in the transaction, but can they really charge you VAT twice?

hi

no you should not be charged vat twice. its illegal and called fraud

firstly call them up asking what's up with your most recent bill... hopefully you have a reciept that you paid the last bill to this guy. if not contact your bank to see if it cleared if it has and they havent recieved the payment get a copy of the cheque and if necessary ask the bank to investigate (when it was cleared, which bank to whom etc) as there's ALOT of fraudulent people walking the streets today, even if they work.

if they still insist this is correct (you paying vat twice) contact inland revenue as they may be collecting extra VAT and not passing it onto inland revenue which is fraud.

don't take any nonsense for an answer even if it may sound legitimate... companies today seem to be in this race for the highest profit recorded so they might try to screw you over for a few quid to make their balances look sweeter

question everything till you are FULLY SATISFIED and remind them it is THEIR job to ensure you ARE satisfied

hopefully that statement was printed before they recieved your cheque and eveything is all fine as long as this new bill has the unpaid amount BEFORE vat on it and not the amount WITH vat

I would suggest that you request an up to date statement showing the payment you made, then ask for a revised bill with the payment taken off. The VAT will then only be on the amount owed. You have the right to a new bill as you have made a payment and it is not shown on the current bill that you hold.

They can't charge vat twice, phone them and tell them of there mistake

But you if your vat registered surely you can claim both figures back anyway if you have the paperwork to proove how much was paid

no they cant, it might be they have either charged you for late payment or added interest on.......or the letter has been automatically send out before they have deducted the first payment off so therefore you would just pay this quarters bill and vat i would phone them up and query this,
