I'm making a spiral ham in oven for dinner...bakes at 300 for 2 hours 15 min. I want to make cornbread casserole for a side. The problem is that it says to bake at 350 for 1 hour. If it put it in the 300 oven for 1.5 hours, do you think that would work? Any suggestions?

Yes, bake the cornbread first--generally, you always bake side dishes first. After the cornbread is baked, cover it with foil. Cook the ham as usual. During the last 20 minutes of cooking the ham, put the casserole back in the oven (leave the foil on). All you need to do is re-heat the casserole.

No. If a recipe says to bake it for 350 for 1 hour, then you should do it or the taste, texture and etc. will be compromised. What you can do is bake both the ham (fully covered to prevent drying) and the cassorole on 350, but pull the ham once it reaches the proper temperature on your thermometer.

Or, If oven time is an issue, do one or the other dishes a day ahead, that way you have plenty of time for the other the day of the event.

Or simply get up earlier than normal the day of and put the ham in and cook it according to recipe, take it out and let it rest, and then turn up the oven and throw in the casserole for 1 hour.

You can do this!

Good luck!

Make the casserole ahead of time, then bake the ham. In the last 1/2 hour of the ham's baking time, pop the casserole back in to reheat and you'll be fine.

If you cook a bread product at a lower temperature for a longer period of time, the bread will either not rise or it will be dry and tough and totally not good.

Make the casserole after the ham is done. Just take the ham out 20 minutes before it's cooking time is up, bake the casserole, turn the oven back down and put the ham back in.
Your ham is already cooked anyway, all your doing is heating it up.

I do not think trying to cook both at once is a good idea. cook the casserole after and then you can stick the ham in the oven on warm to heat it back up if necessary. If you try both, it is most likely that one of them is not going to turn out.

If this is a casserole, like dressing, use a thermometer and bake as you have noted, make sure the temp reaches at least 145 degrees. If it is an actual batter for bread then you do need to bake it separately.

Bake your cornbread casserole first and then bake the ham or visa versa.
Oven temps are there for a reason and should not be adjusted.
If you bake the ham first you can always reheat to serving temp.

I think it would work. Just make sure the corn bread is done. If you want it alittle browner on the top, take out the ham and turn the heat up alittle to brown. The ham will not cool down enough when ready to serve.

Maybe you could make the cassarole after you have cooked the ham? Ham is precooked and you are warming it up anyways. Good luck....Sounds yummy~!
