It takes a lot of patience and practice! First you need to wait until they have developed enough dexterity and are interested. Children are usually ready between the ages of 4 and 6. Make sure they know the difference between their right and left foot. You can put a sticker or tie a piece of yarn on one foot to help them learn the difference. Choose one method and stick to it to eliminate confusion (make two loops and tie them into a knot). If you are using several steps, break them down one at a time. Once they have mastered the first step, introduce the next. Make sure that others who are trying to teach this lesson are using the same method as well. Be consistent! Make up a game or poem that you play or recite each time you give the lesson. Here are a few fun ones http://teachers.net/lessons/posts/1952.html Have your child sit in front of you or in your lap when you give the lesson. If you are dominant with one hand and your child is dominant with the opposite hand, face your child when giving the lesson. Practice, practice, practice! Hope this helps!

I used this song with mine and it worked like a charm. Also having two different color shoe laces helped too.

Criss Cross Tying Shoes
using the tune: Splish Splash I was taking a Bath

Criss Cross and go under the bridge
Then you got to pull it tight.
Make a loop but keep a long tail
That is how to do it right
Then you take the other string
and you wrap it 'round the loop
Pull it through the hole
Now you got the scoop
Criss Cross and go under the bridge (this is where you tie the loops together)
Now you made a Double Knot!

the other answers here are what i would do but how about a different way? I've never tried it but it just popped into my head. What if you sew a button or a bead on the tip of where the loop would be... so that they can just tie those together. it would be the same as maknig the two bunny looped ears.... cept they would be holding the buttons and i think it would be easier for them to do... might be more fun too.

Just show them....Loop Loop Swoop and Pull When i was in Kindergarten (15 years ago) my teacher had a piece of cardboard (about 12''X12'') with a string on each side (thru holes punched) to practice on, it seemed to help some of the kids. Good Luck :)

My mom taught me by making "bunny ears" with the laces and making some story about tying his ears in a knot so he couldn't get away from me. lol.
