if the churches stepped down from their pedestal and started paying taxes like every other business, that would be a good start.

Just my view to your good question.
Have an absolute separation of church and state as far as government is concerned. Let the church run the church and let government handle the governing.
Included in this concept is the fact that those who do belong to the church also belong to the state thus the individuals and the church should be taxed, and should not be allowed to receive benefits from the government unless the taxes are paid such as police protection, fire protection, etc. Likewise the church must restrict their church activities and functions of the church to the church property and not use the streets, parks, etc. for their church activities that are restrictive in nature only pertaining to the affairs of the church.
Of course this does not say the church members can not go to the park for a picnic, but it is saying that the church members should not hold church services in the park.
Just my opinion for what its worth.

Simple, we have to go back to our roots and see what our forefathers really meant by seperation of Church and State. Government has to allow religion to flourish without taking that original freedom away.
Jews should be allowed to put up public displays of the Star of David when celebrations are near.
Christians should be allowed to put up public displays of cribs and crosses when celebrations are near.
Non-Jews, Non-Christians should be allowed to put up public displays of their beliefs when their celebrations are near.
Being an Athesist is a religion and should be allowed to put up nothing when their non-celebrations are near too!
Lawyers that fight freedoms and take away our freedoms to worship and seperate these great UNITED STATES should allow others to put them up on the flag pole and celebrate the end of idiots and a return to Freedoms that are failing in this country.
