Sorry to disappoint you, Lucy but I am certain this isn't caused by a virus. Viral infections doesn't last this long, but I'm not saying this is really bad. This is most probably caused by a bacteria (as opposed to a virus) which need a more aggressive treatment than viral infections.
It's possible that whatever bacteria caused your throat infection is resistant to penicillin, so I suggest that you go back to your GP.
Resistant throat infection (one's that keep on going back) may result to heart complications which you don't want to have.
Your GP can either ask for a culture and sensitivity test to ensure what kind of bacteria you have harbouring in your throat, and decide which antibiotics the bacteria is sensitive to. Or, a more straightforward approach is for your GP to prescribe another type of antibiotic.
A good remedy to reduce throat irritations to lessen the pain and discomfort is to dissolve honey in war water and drinking it, or if your the stronger type, boil ginger in water and drink it while it is still warm. And if your faint - hearted, the usual warm water with salt also works really well. An increase in your water intake is also really helpful.
Good Luck and get well soon.

If your throat infection is lasting that long and penicillin didn't help, you might want to consider other possible causes aside from infection. Acid reflux for example can cause chest pain AND sore throats... Also, sinus infections can drain to the back of the throat and cause pain there.
If it "affected your chest," that might mean you had an infected ulcer. These can be caused by and are related to acid reflux, and so penicillin might have helped your throat by clearing the ulcer even if it wasn't really a throat infection. Reflux issues come back quickly however if the root cause isn't treated.
If your tonsils are out, it's also less likely to be a true bacterial throat infection.
Also penicillin is for bacteria, not viruses! A viral sore throat usually has other symptoms and doesn't last that long, however.
