Edit: My cat has no molars; they were removed due to disease when we adopted her. She can't eat dry food -- only canned food.

My vet suggested that I give my Persians a teaspoon of canned pumpkin once a week when they are not having problems and more often when they are.

Aside from that, make sure you brush your cat often. When they clean themselves they are swallowing all of the loose hair that they take out through their mouths. Every bit that you take out with a brush is less that they end up swallowing.

Try giving the cat something called Petromalt. It helps break up the hairballs in the cat's system. The other thing that works is letting the cat eat grass.

Best method for the prevention of hairballs is BRUSHING cat's coat everyday or at least, every other day. I have a long-haired cat and I brush his hair at least four times a week. I also give him a tad of hairball remedy twice a week after I brush his teeth (he thinks it is reward). I have yet to see this cat hacking up a hairball, for he never has.

Let your cat each a little butter each day. It keeps the intenstines "well-oiled" to so to speak.

You can also put a little dab of Vaseline on the paw - it's perfectly safe and they'll lick it off when they clean themselves.
