It could be many things. I myself (at 24) have the beginning or arthritis in my knees. One knee has gotten to a point where when it is irritated enough it can go out on me and leave me on crutches for a day or two until it has stopped. Not saying that will always happen but arthritis is something to look into. If her pain is really severe and she has lost "control" over her knee it could be a Meniscal Tear, this would not be a good thing as alot of times it means surgery. But seeing how you think it is in a "starting stage" then it is probably arthritis. The best thing she can do is have it looked at especially if this is an ongoing problem. The doctor will be able to properly diagnose it and prescribe any pain relief medication if it is so needed. If there is a cure (sometimes like with some types of arthritis there is no real cure just pain management) he will be able to direct you to the right treatment. Below is a link to a site that can give you a few more knee related issues.

Your mother needs to se the Dr. then an MRI, of the knee, to see what is going on in there.I have knee pain too, and it is from a torn meniscus, which is the cartilage, between the two big bones in the leg. The meniscus, is our shock absorber, between the two bones. If there is a tear, it can be very painful, and you really need to see the Dr. I have to go in for arthroscopic surgery on my knee to have that torn piece removed. An MRI, test will show what is going on with the knee, then you can decide what to do. There is a good website, called the KneeGuru, and they will answer questions about your condition. Good Luck, and do not let this condition get worse than it is. Have it checked...............

Ask her to do meditation for an hour daily after getting self-realization from an experienced spiritual teacher. Side by side ask her to take any medicine prescribed by her doctor. Her problem should be under control in four to six months viz. she can reduce her medicine intake or stop them altogether.
