Jesus WAS a descendant of David. Read the genealogy of Jesus in the first few chapters of the Book of Matthew and you will see where Jesus' bloodline had been traced back to David's day. The signage was a part of Roman policy at crucifixions to show to people, "This is what we do to people who commit crimes such as the things listed on the paper above their heads". In other words, they went through with the Jewish wish to have Jesus crucified for simply BEING who He said he was.
