Specific example - a somewhat religious girl friend of mine suggested I wear a more "modest" bikini, but she was wearing a bikini, too! What is a "modest" bikini??? Does modest mean "no sexier than me?"

well what kind of bikini were you wearing and what kind was she wearing? Was your bikini held up by strings only and showed more skin than she did? It depends on the two bikinis, but you are probably right in thinking she shouldn't have said that to you. Its kinda hypocritical.

For some I guess it does.
However, I would not consider a bikini modest. She may have meant something like the difference between a bikini when they were first invented, which was equivalent to colored underware and a spaghetti strap bra, and the dental floss types that are out there now.

To me Modest means wearing clothing that covers all the parts that should only be uncovered in front of your husband, or during certain doctor's visits. And not just barely covered, but covered in a way where there is something left to the imagination.

Modest means wearing clothing that does not reveal to much of the body or clothing that would be considered a temptation to someone else when looked at.

"If its not for sale, don't advertise"

In my opinion, modest and bikini are two words that do not go together descriptively. I cannot say without knowing what this girl was wearing if she was wearing more of a tankini or an actual bikini, if she was wearing similar suit than this is kind of hypocritical of her to say. Any way you look at it a bikini is not in any way under the heading of "modest".

"Modest" is a relative term. Some Christians wouldn't be caught dead in a swim suit let alone a bikini. Some girls will only wear dresses. Some don't mind skin tight jeans. Reading the Timothy verse in it context would seem to suppose that a woman's outer wardrobe often expresses her inner sanctification: 1 Timothy 2:9 "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;" Are you going to maintain your humbleness and meekness wearing a bikini? Most girls are not able to; they want to turn heads and want to show how beautiful they are. If these are your motives, check yourself.

On a personal note, I wouldn't wear a bikini, if I was going to the beach, because I know I have a problem with pride.

The term modest is an adjective meaning having or exhibiting a moderate view of one's own abilities, talents, and value. It is also used to mean proceeding from or having a reluctance to draw attention to oneself; that is, retiring or diffident. In this sense, it may be used to mean chaste or shy. It is also often applied to an observance of conventional and traditional proprieties in dress, speech or behaviour.

It has also been used to mean free from ostentation or showiness. A synonym in this sense of the term would be unpretentious or even plain. It could also refer to moderate or limited in quantity, size, or range; that is, not extreme.

Modest comes from the Latin term modestus, meaning moderate. The adverb form of the word modest is the term modestly.

Given your situation, I would say modest means not too flashy. You know...not showing too much of anything.
