You'll be fine in slacks and a sweater. Sadly, very few people "dress" for the theatre anymore (except for opening nights - I've seen gowns and furs).

No one can see what you are wearing - you probably have a jacket over your clothes and usually don't remove it till you are near your seat - once the play starts, the lights go out. Since most theatres don't have coat checks, I usually take a plastic bag for my jacket and put it under my seat; otherwise, I have to keep it in my lap.

I just got back from New York for New years. We went see Annie at Madison Square Garden. It was night and we had the "cheap seats." I wore jeans and a cute shirt and I was dressed up. But you might want to splurge on the seats cause we had a hard time seeing the whole stage with people getting up and down, and if your short you are out of luck cause they don't have stadium seating.

You'll be fine. As others have said, many people dress casually for Broadway shows.

It's more important to show up on time and not be making noise (with food, cell phones, or anything else) during the performance.

Have fun!

Yes, most people don't get dressed up to see a broadway show anymore. You should be just fine.

It depends on the time of day, but as long as the outfit looks nice, you should be ok. Night shows are much more dressy affairs.
