Very likely you have a VM service associated to your number. Verizon, for example, provides this. We use an answering machine but occasionaly a call will get through to our Verizon VM. The phone's dial tone is staggered when you pick it up indicating you have a VM message. You call a number and enter your pass code. You may want to call yout Telco and see if you have this service.
