Its usual around 8, but you should really base it on that child's weight and height which is what car seats base their seat's construction

Usually age 4 or they weigh 50 lbs. every state is different,so check the state website on transportation

I believe that now it isn't based on your child's age but on his or hers weight and height.

IN CALIFORNIA IT IS 4'9"AND HAS TO BE 60 LBS IN WEIGHT IN ABLE TO RIDE W/ OUT CAR SEAT OR BOOSTER.
