Nothing is hacker proof... so don't believe what Apple or Microsoft says about that.
Security is a huge improvement over XP, but it's ANNOYING as hell, box after box pops up asking you to accept or continue and after awhile you miss the simplicity of XP.
XP with the proper utilities installed would be just as secure as Vista without all the annoyances. Vista just looks cooler, but there are transformation packs that can make XP look and act a lot like Vista without all the headaches.
I'm actually in the process of backing up all my data from my Vista system so I can go back to XP... since there are no printer drivers yet for my HP Laserjet 1020. My version of WS FTP doesn't work in Vista and I have had several other programs that will not work. WinAMP which is one of my favorite used to pop up and tell me that it has "a known compatibility problem" with Vista and that was centered around a DLL file which I found in my Windows.OLD folder, then I copied it over to my WinAMP program files folder in the Vista install and WinAMP works fine now, but other programs are not so fortunate.
Another thing driving me nuts is that every single time I open up Photoshop, it asks me to register. I've registered three times already with it, told it not to ask me again and yet it still asks. This never happened with XP.
I'm going back to XP and I am going to wait until around summer / fall before moving back to Vista in hopes that more drivers and software will begin to work.

Uh,Yeah !
Lots and lots of problems!
And No it is not by any means "hacker proof", far from it.
Of course Microsoft is going to lie about it in order to get you to buy it, after all lies and deception are at least two thing that Microsoft is very good at.
Vista is plagued with all kinds of problems and the apologists will tell you that it is the same with any new OS release but that is also not true.
Vista is just plane inferior to both Mac and Linux by a wide margin.
Linux is the future of desktop computing because just about everything is moving to be web based, it is already happening.
Learn it now or be left behind.

as with any OS, the higher the popularity, the higher the hacking attempt. No computer is actually hacker proof unless it's not connected to the web.
Some people will argue that MAC is all this and that, but it's not. If you read press release lately they have had several security flaws. Most companies don't use mac servers, if one even exist, so why would a person spend time trying to learn how to get into it.

i personaly do not have vista
but have helped friends and others with it.
first it will slow down you r computer. even a new one the requirements ov this O/S is like i've ever even heard of.
as for problems. one of the most annoying is the driver incompalibility. especially if you are one to play games. it took my friend over four hours to get video drivers and such just to play WOW.
also nothing is "hacker Proof"

No, Vista is not hacker proof. No OS is.
However, it's important to note that the kernel of Windows and the way the OS handles calls is far less secure than the UNIX/OSX/Linux alternatives. It's not just a matter of popularity: MacOS is more secure than Windows.

The new system granted is much slower compared to xp but if it is new then granted it will get a bit of time to get used to but I'm sure it's fine.
Sadly also it is not "hack-proof" it seems to be much harder but from reports and hackers online, it can still be done.
You should note that before coming online you should have:
A personal firewall not just Windows
Anti-virus
Anti-spyware
A running scanner (optional)
Anti-spy (optional)
To ensure your system is safe.

http://pclinuxos.com is upto 50X faster, doesn't need to have all the DRM, nor malware and virus programs running.
So, if you want to run upto 50X faster, you should try that, or one of the 310 at http://livecdlist.com or the hundreds FREE at http://distrowatch.com
Why? You ask! Well, Ever hear of Hotmail? Runs FreeBSD. Yahoo runs FreeBSD. MSN and Microsoft.com all run behind 15,000 Linux leased Akamai servers, for protection.
It's simple. Free and Open Source OSes run faster, and have thousands of free programs and applications.
My clients are disgusted with the anti-green movement of the Wintel alliance.
They recycle current computers by running FOSS, and some did try Vista, but, the costs of upgrading 15,000 to 145,000 computers at each of the DOD, FAA, DOT, and schools and universities, isn't justified. That is about $3,100 per 'seat' of tax payer money.
But, you won't mind, will you, if it is 'for the children'?
