There are two types of breathers, mouth breathers and nose breathers. Breathing thru the nose and exhaling thru the nose looks better than always breathing thru your mouth. Breathing thru the mouth makes a person look like they may be fatigued. If you are into taking singing lessons a good teacher will teach you "breathing techniques" that will help you sustain those extremely long notes. There are CPAP (constant positive air pressure) machines for people that suffer from sleeping disorders. It delivers a constant air flow thru the nose so you are forced to breath that way. I guess there are some problems that are associated with breathing thru the mouth while sleeping. Check with a doctor if you think you have problem breathing. Not getting enough oxygen can eventually lead to some premature organ failure. Until you figure it out, don't hold your breath. (lol)

how to breathe properly you mean
Many people with anxiety disorders breathe shallowly which may lead to increased anxiety and even panic. This technique will help you learn the right way to breathe.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:
Begin by lying flat on your back or standing up straight. You may also sit up straight in a chair, if that is more comfortable.
Place your hand on your stomach area.
Breathe as you normally would and notice whether your hand and stomach rise and fall, or your chest rises and falls, as you breathe.
When you are breathing properly, your chest will stay still while your stomach will rise slightly as you breathe in. When you breathe out, your chest will continue to stay still while your stomach lowers slightly.
To learn to breathe correctly, begin by slowly breathing in through your nose on the count of 5 while gently pushing your hand up with your stomach.
Hold the breath for a count of 5.
Slowly exhale through your mouth for a count of five while gently pushing down on your stomach.
Repeat this process for 5 minutes.
If the process causes you to begin panicking, only do it for as long as you are able.
Increase the length of time each day until you can do the exercise for at least 5 minutes twice per day.
If you continue to practice breathing this way, you soon will be doing it naturally throughout the day.
An additional benefit will be that once you are familiar with the exercise, you may do it while experiencing anxiety or at the beginning of a panic attack, and you will feel relief.
Tips:
Do not be angry with yourself or give up if you cannot do this exercise correctly right away. It takes practice. Give yourself time.
Do not be afraid of the exercise causing panic. Remember: you are in control and can stop at any time. Take it as slowly as needed.

If you would like to breathe properly and feel relaxed then you should only be taking about four breathes a minute. The faster you breathe then the more anxious you will be. I was taught that you should breathe in through your nose slowly and exhale slowly, it takes practise but is worth it. It stops panic attacks and helps you to feel calm.

it's not stupid sometimes I'm so over whelmed with thought i find myself forgetting to breath. Is this what you are talking about? i don't know what causes this, and sometimes it scares the s*** out of me. Maybe we do need help? i refuse to believe that but...i really don't know anymore.
