Good question. It seems they would accomplish more if they obsessed about becoming better in their own faith, instead of obsessing over tearing down another. Who knows what drives these people. Maybe they had a bad experience with the religion and just feel like they're on some mission to tear it down. It's sort of like venting their anger about it maybe.

It's pathetic if their intent is to make sure nobody joins THAT church. But as we both know, one persons "obsessing" is another persons two year mission. I've heard lots of people say that they could never be a Mormon because all we ever do is think and talk religion. So I guess it's interesting if their intent is to just share their beliefs, condescending if they think that only they have done research on religion, and ignorant if they think that bad mouthing a particular church will make any difference to the adherents or those who have done their own investigating.
However, to answer your first question, Why, I don't know. I think they must think they're doing some good. But it's just gotten a little skewed between their heart and their mouth.

It's kind of interesting, but very pathetic as well. It is definitely condescending.

I think some people get focused on a particular religion because somehow they feel that particular religion directly opposes what they believe. I'm an equal opportunity religion opponent.

A fundamentalist is a fundamentalist if it wasn't religion then it would be politics, ethnicity or whatever else they could obsess about.
