Is one an Atheist if they do not believe in the Christian God set (God, Christ and Holy Spirit)? Or does this also get cast upon those who believe in a higher spiritual power without believing in the Christian, Muslim and other religious stories?

Please don't bother with dictionary definitions...I'm looking for opinions more than what is written about the word.

atheists vary widely. the one thing they have in common is the disbelief in a deity, a personified god. that does not mean that all atheists do not have spiritual beleifs. buddhism is atheist. i am atheist because i do not believe that the divinity of All could ever be personified into a being, as this would over-simplify it & much meaning would be lost.

An atheist is one who doesn't believe in the existence of any gods.

Some say a "weak atheist" doesn't believe in God (assuming God exists but just doesn't believe) and a "strong atheist" believes there is no god.

Anaerobic means "without air". So A-theist means "without god". It does not apply to only Christianity though many Christians think it does. Atheist means without a belief in any god at all.

As an atheist, I do not believe that there is any sort of god or supernatural being, and I also do not believe that there is any sort of afterlife. Other atheists might have slightly diverging views but I think this covers it, on the whole.

Atheists means no God. No one can legitimately be called an atheists if they believe in ANY higher power than themselves of a spiritual nature.

Not just the christian god sparky, I reject the lot of them. Christian God, Zeus, Ra, Allah, Odin, Zoltar, you name it and I think it is origin myth and superstition. They all have the same level of credibility as far as I am concerned.

As for their prophets, well, mostly they seemed to advocate 'get along with each other' which sounds fine to me. I don't like the homophobic bits though. But did they talk to and in some cases die for a completely non-existent god? yes.

Atheism is not about opinions it is about facts, atheists don't share the theists belief in god/gods. It is not even necessary to believe there is no god we just don't agree with the theists claim that that there is one, insufficient evidence...actually none at all.

Atheists are free of belief in gods.

Originally the term atheist was used to describe anyone who was a heretic or infidel. So it could be used to describe Hindus, etc.
Now it has a more specific meaning and would not be applied to Hindus or others.
