I'm kinda tired of everytime I start to stutter, someone pipes up about how their brother, neighbor, sisters bestfiends mothers second cousin stuttered too...
Are there really that many stutterer's out there??
O-and just to let the people know who do know a stuttterer, we DONT need to slow down(most just stutter slower), we DONT think faster than we talk, and we DONT appreciate you finishing our sentences.
I know many are just trying to help, but just sit there patiently, without staring and let us finish:)

You may be right on the everyone knowing someone who stutters! My sister has stuttered her whole life. Why, don't know. I do know this, you are correct on the rudeness with other people. I have gotten myself in many confrontations over someone picking on my sister about it. Just let it roll off and remember that you can always set an example for those ignorant people!

I think everyone at one time or another stutters on words, even President Bush stutteres. I do not know someone who stutters on a daily basis, if I came accross someone who did, patience I think would be the key on that. (although sometimes pateince is very difficult for some people and that is their flaw)

It is rude that someone would finish your sentence because they cannot wait for you to. As far as people saying my brother sister, blah blah blah, I think they are trying to show empathy, to make you more comfortable. Which is thoughful, but almost insulting. If I met you and you stuttered I probley wouldn't bring it up, that would be like pointing out that someone didn't have an arm, you just don't do that.

I do not stutter but I have a serious "S" problem sometimes, I get like spit build up or something in my mouth and instead of saying a simple word like "so" it comes out "ssho" followed by a whole lot of spit. I have to be sure I swallow before I speak or all my "s" words would sound like that. It gets embarashing exspecially when I accidently spit on my friends. Then I make a joke of it and delibertly spit saying "sshorry, I have a sshpit problem" everyone laughs and thats that.

I have a sibling who stutters. It never bothered me to hear him stutter. I just went with his flow. As for myself, I don't stutter, but I do think faster than my mouth can put out the words and so I tend to omit words. Many times, I need to slow down my thinking or do the reverse by talking faster. I sometimes have a problem with my typing. I omit words as well because my thoughts race faster than my fingers on the keyboard. Last time I was clocked for my typing skills, I can did more than 120 words a minute. No one is perfect. But I've noticed that when people do stutter the most is when they are nervous. I think this is why people might tell you to slow down. I think they mean to tell you to slow your nerves or your frustration.

Well, they've never said that to me (I stutter also)... and I've only known two other people who stutter even though I've lived in various countries. So I don't think there are that many.

As to the other question, it's empathy.
