Nowhere did I mean to imply ALL (don't put words in my question!) It was simply an observation about a constant assertion that MANY atheists on Y!A make. To prove this, see the examples of MANY (majority?) of atheists' answers to this question.

draecoiram - Per your answer: that's a literary strategy called irony (sarcasm). Perhaps you've heard of it?

STATS! I need statistical proof that atheists know more about the Bible than Christians. W/o stats, it's just propaganda.

Gregory L - Wow!
Luke was a physician (wrote Luke and Acts).
Matthew was a tax collector (CPAs are uneducated?).
Paul was a Jewish rabbi.
Any questions?

Emily H - That's how much of the Bible you know. God did not send the flood just because humanity "pissed him off". He sent the flood b/c humanity rejected Him and their thoughts were constantly on doing evil.
Thanks for proving my point!

I am an atheist and I hereby declare that I never could begin to compete with others in bible knowledge. If I should ever have given a different impression I regret and repent.

Hmmm given that you imply all atheist in your statement without offering proof that all atheist propose this, I'd say that this is a generalization based on your experiences and has no basis in reality, other than your limited sample set - so no, without any further data your assertion can't be proven.
I would hazard that a few atheists and Christians on R&S know more about the Bible that most others (both types) as many of the post here a low level of comprehension about the Bible, its teachings or indeed science in general.

The present day King James version of the Bible was written by priests about the year 400 AD. They worked with previous versions of the Bible (the ones that you're not allowed to see). These priests knew that they were re-writing the rule book for Christianity. During Biblical days there were no churches. People gathered in one-another's house and worshiped. Many feel that those priests added the verse that God says to financially support the Church for the rest of your life. When Jesus walked the Earth, 99% of the people were illiterate. Only the wealthy could attend school to acquire reading and writing skills. The Land Owners, Politicians, the Business Owners, Scribes, etc. The farmers, fisherman, laborers (Apostles) had no formal education. Yet they wrote letters? Study the History of Civilization at a University (not a religious one) not from the Bible. How did Noah gather 2 Polar Bears for the Arc when he didn't know that they existed? Yet you insist that it's the word of God.

who really knows? I do know that people that try to 'catch' christians in falsehoods, or 'catch' the bible in discrepancies-will be armed beforehand. I can't answer alot of things off the top of my head. So, I tend to believe that atheists, or people unhappy with christians, arm themselves beforehand and then SHOOT. Given time and resources, all their answers could have scripture based responses, but tactics considered, not everyone can spit out everything ad lib. There is a website -if you type in 'answers' it'll bring up this board, and then a couple down 'christian answers'. for any non-believers or people with honest questions regarding the bible or christian faith, I've found some great answers to my questions. So, if someone is legitimate, and not just angy, I suggest that website.

I do not insult Christians as a matter of practice, you can check my answers: I always show respect. But the simple fact is, it is extremely difficult to believe that it is the word of God and that it should be followed if you actually take the time to read it. The Bible forbids eating shellfish and wearing poly cotton blends, encourages slavery, stoning disobedient children, invading and killing everyone including the babies in neighboring countries if they worship the "wrong" god, and features an "All loving" God who wiped all animals and people off the face of the earth for pissing him off.
Christians refuse to read these parts of the Bible. Atheists and people of other religions (they exist, too!) are not afraid to read these things because they don't feel the need to wear blinders.

I think Atheist do read the bible.
What they just can't understand, is that the bible is an interpretation.
They use verses to make the bible seem wrong, and yet they don't read the pages before it. To understand it.
The question they have is "if I dont see god, then he's not here, and it's bull that a unseen entity is around us"
then they claim to have "read the bible" but just so happen to skip the part that says god will not show signs, because he wants us to choose him.
Most of what the bible says, when we intepret it, is exactly what scientist believe happened.
I bet scientist read the bible, for their "theory's"

Firstly your generalising, I'd say the number of athiests with a knowledge of the bible are a minority, however the athiests on Yahoo R+S are likely to have a knowledge of the bible because that is how they are able to argue against it on here.
The majority of athiests don't read the bible because they can tell from a distance the chances that it's true are very slim.
Also what is very noticeable as an athiest is the fact that Christians tend to have a very poor knowledge of the bible, and so it is an easy assumption to make (that generally athiests know more about the bible than christians). Christians tend to have a terrible habbit of picking out the bits they like and disreagrding the bits they don't, and they have managed to create a religion where their ideals and beliefs are contradictory to those of their holy book. Don't beleive that's true? then read the bible!

The arrogance of the atheists as the know-it-all. I have always told my children that in this world there are people who you never want to meet. In other words, it does one no good to ever know them. Satanists would be one. Drug kings or crime kings would be others. It is often better to not even meet these people. Their influence is negative; not to mention dangerous. From what I have seen on Yahoo Answers, no one can twist the truth any better than the atheists. However, I cannot prove anything and atheists and Christians have debated and not proven anything.

Because many, like myself, studied the bible intensely before leaving the church and Christianity.
Many Christians never went through such an intense introspection or study of the bible.
I don't say I know more about the bible than all Christians, just the majority I've met.
If you need proof, then perhaps you'll do the study, double-blind, that tests biblical knowledge of atheists and Christians. Since you are the one that wants to know.

To refute some on this post, there are Christians on this site with a college degree who knows much if not more than most atheists here. Plus they have an advantage over the atheist because the Holy Spirit helps them with their wisdom, and has abandoned the atheist who has to rely on their own wisdom.
