I don't think the producers ever had the guts to actually put in an openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transsexual character. Probably the closest came in the ST:TNG episode "The Outcast," in which Will Riker became romantically involved with a J'naii, a race of androgynous beings. The J'naii looked upon expressions of any sort of distinctly male or female gender, especially sexual liaisons, as a sexual perversion, though some, like the one who fell for Riker, had discovered that they felt more inclined to one gender. These J'naii were considered outcasts and criminals and had to hide their sexuality. Riker's lover was discovered and forced to undergo "psychotectic therapy," which "cured" it of its "perversion."

Lots of references to such things... the smootch between Jadzia Dax and her symbiont's wife, (her symbiont had been joined with a man at the time she was previously married) and showed her continued attraction as Jadzia to this woman, the episode about the woman born on a world where it was "unnatural" to see one's self as either sex and be attracted to someone of the opposite sex, not to mention Major Kira's alternate personality as the "Intended" who smooched on both guys and women when frisky... enough challenges to the old homophobia to spook many a phobe.

Well George Takei is, so if he was playing Mr Sulu to type, then I guess.... Presumably it wasn't against his religion in the 23rd century. Quite right too.
Shouldn't you be Captain James T(iberius) Darwin today, anyway?
