The web is filled with all sorts of people and many wicked people, racists, hate-groups, people with all sorts of phobias, immature adults, misbehaving adolescents etc. use it tothat post their insults and other malicious posts hiding behind nicknames. It's not just answers that are insulting, questions can also be insulting as they aren't meant to obtain information on something but to provoke or insult other people.
I'm sure if everyone had to fill in his full name and home address this kind of posts wouldn't appear anymore. But I'm afraid also useful answers would get less as most of people prefer to remain anonimous in order to retain privacy. It would be good if users read USER POLICY and stick to it. A way to deal with them is to report violators by clicking report user, but let that for those most offensive.
Being mean to others is a way to deal with their own frustrations for some people. Remember the story of a little weak boy who got bullied and then became a policeman so he can bully other people to cure his frustrations?
It's same online. Someone has mental disorder, someone got sacked from his job, someone has just been knocked in his face, someone fears the unknown and someone has just gotten up on the wrong foot.
But normally you can expect a stupid answer to a stupid question (let's say if the question itself is totally unserious). Unfortunately, sometimes a smart question also get some stupid answers, due to annoying individuals who like to project their own problems on others.

I know what you mean! People on here can be so rude it's really stupid. I think many people who are like that are very young and just have too much attitude. I have seen a lot of questions from people who even say they are 13 or 14, I think it must be a maturity thing.

I know right! All you look for is informative answers and people get downright nasty and rude, and sometimes just answer something random so they can get points. Really though, that's just life, people are ignorant. Just don't post anything too ignorant and offensive and if that still don't work, then don't let it hurt your feelings. They're only typing behind a computer anyway...

Anywhere you go on the internet, you're gonna find trolls. You just have to put up with it and ignore them. It's not really all that hard; after all, if a biting remark from some anonymous, mean-spiritied person who has no real connection to your life is actually gonna hurt your feelings, you probably need to thicken your hide a bit, anyways.

I am in agreement with those who say it is a mix here, like in person.
I try to give witty answers to humourous questions and silly ones to silly ones. It is a shame more people can not be nice overall.

The people you are referring to are actually mean to people everywhere they go. They can just get away with it easier in an anonymous forum than they can in person. When you hear from one of them, and you most certainly WILL, just consider the source and ignore them. Maybe give them a thumbs down or something. They really don't deserve your attention.

I suppose the proportion of mean people on here reflects the proportion in the outside world.
Luckily for you, most of the people who have answered your question are the nice ones.
Me included, in case you were waiting for me to insult you or something.

Unfortunately, when Yahoo closed down the discussion boards (due to rampant abuse and nastiness) many of those people came here instead. Sad, really, that they are like that.

I know what you mean. I think its horrible especially when the question is a really personal one or when someone is calling someone else stupid for asking a question - its an answer site for a reason.
Some people are just pathetic and should just go away

it's horrible, isn't it? Don't worry though, I work for the NSA, we find out where those people live, then we go round and stick used chewing gum on their furniture. Honestly, there's a whole department devoted to it, we're really busy.
