I recently put a new serpentine belt and tensioner on my 95 Dakota because the belt was noisy and I figured it was just time for a new one. Now it squeals worse than ever...I've tried belt "dressing", a product of CRC company and also WD-40. It will shut up for about five minutes, then right back to a horrendous shriek...any ideas? Did I get a cheap tensioner? Is one belt brand better than another? Driving me nuts...Thanks! K ;o)

Possibly a cheap tensioner, but not likely.

More likely another pulley bearing squealing, like an idler pulley. The idler pulley is between the alternator and compressor, and is a smooth faced pulley that runs on the back (smooth side) of the belt if I remember right.

If you find it is in fact the belt making the noise, the best one to get is a Dayco Poly Cog belt, they're the best at preventing belt slippage, which causes the squealing noise. You can get them at Advance I know, and I'm sure others carry them as well.

Ya know it may not be your belt. It could very well be a power steering or even worse, a water pump that that bearings are worn out. idle your engine, get some soapy water in a spray bottle and spray it on your belt, (contact side), if the noise goes away your home free, if not time to investigate which pump it is.
