Sprint Cup in 2008? Sprint Nextel confirmed Sunday that it is mulling over the possibility of changing the name of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series in 2008. “As we have stated before, Sprint Nextel is actively researching the best action regarding the name of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series,” said a Sprint Nextel public relations representative Sunday. “The name will remain NASCAR Nextel Cup Series for the duration of the 2007. Our hope is to have more information by late summer regarding our plans for changing or not changing the name in 2008.” NASCAR officials had no comment on the possibility of a name change for its top series..(SpeedTV.com)...

Jesus, will the NASCAR identity crisis never end? It's not like Sprint has eliminated the Nextel name...so why bother changing it????

Why can't it just be the good old Winston Cup?

The problem with "Sprint Cup" is you think of "sprint cars". I've gotten to the point where I just refer to them as "Cup races" anyway. Don't see the point in changing it again, unless Sprint's going to drop the Nextel name.

The Sprint Cup sounds as good (or bad) as the Nextel Cup. I miss the name "Winston Cup" although I'm glad it's no longer sponsored by a cigarette company. No matter what you name it, the fans will still be there.

Sprint Cup Cars and sprint cars are too confusing and may mix people up. Imagine some schmuck buying tickets for a sprint car race at Eldora and wondering where Dale Junior is. Lets go back to what they used to be called before Winston and call them Grand Nationals.

As long as they pay NASCAR they will be able to call it the tiddley winks cup if they so choose. However, I wish they would find a name and stick to it. I think it's getting confusing, espically for new fans to be able to figure out what the heck is going on. I'm also guilty of still saying Winston Cup :-)

First of all if they do change it they should let Jeff Burton change his car over to AT&T, or they will be breaking their own rules. If they change it I think the obvious promotion is the race for the chase but the Sprint for the championship.

Sounds like a backwater dirt track festival. Makes Nascar sound cheap.
