Let me tell you a story... BRIEFLY:

An Officer of the Ottawa Police searched a youth's car (with their permission) found $9000. All the money he had in the world (can't keep it at home because his house is robbed constantly) so the cop took the $9000 and told the youth that he can have it back when he can prove it's his! This guy has a 'reputation' but at the time had no warrants, charges pending, conditions etc. but this cop just TOOK his $9000. Is that allowed? Or did a 'COP' just rob a kid? Let me add to this story: The money was obtained from working an under-the-table job... which many people work. This youth cannot get a bank account for a number of reasons: one being that the last time he was held at the police station, they confiscated his wallet which contained all of his ID's and then claimed that they never saw his wallet and that they did not take it from him. So he cannot open an account without ID and in Canada it takes 6-9 months to get your citizenship documentation re-issued and you cannot get any of your other ID's without your citizenship. So his choices were: A: Hide it in my house and risk it getting stolen
B: Hide it in the car I'm riding in because I'm in the car with my money.

His employer is not willing to say that he was paying him under the table...

Where did the money go?

There are these things called BANKS. People can keep their money there...for a fee. How often do you think cops pull over a youth and find $9,000 in their car? The cop probably thought the guy was a dealer or something. The cop won't keep the money..he can't.

For one police in Canada cannot search a car without just cause. So what was the youth doing?

Secondly $9000 worth of undocumented money floating around in the back of the car, a car that was suspicious enough to be searched?

I am sure he can file to have it release however it was probably being held as the fruit of a crime, since the he is unable to prove he obtained it legally. Working under the table is actually illegal, so the money is going to most likely be held anyhow.

You said he was driving? Well a drivers license is more than enough ID required to get a Bank account anywhere in Canada.

His money is being held as mentioned, he will have to make formal claim to the money that it is not a 'fruit of a crime" Proof or witness he worked for someone and the such.

the Cop did not rob him, the cop took what appeared to be suspicious money from a known suspect.

The next time, get a bank account. How did he get that money? If it were by working then he will have pay stubs and tax returns, right? Unless of course, he earned the money illegally, in which case, the money can be taken. No corruption here, following the letter of the law.
