I'm not 100% sure what the VAT rates in the UK, but in Ireland there are 4 different VAT rates, the same principles apply in the UK, I am just not sure of the percentages.

You were probably charged 2 different rates, one rate for parts and a separate one for labour, which in Ireland is cheaper than the rate for parts. Usually before they arrive at your bill, they have already included VAT, unless you are in business yourself and are VAT registered, and you want to offset VAT paid against VAT to your customers..

Is this a question for homework??? just curious

You will be charged VAT on parts and labour IF the local garage is VAT registered. It is most likely that they are.
