Well for starters, find out what the discussion is going to be about. Then sit on your computer or go to a library and try to get as much information on that topic. Write down points that you may think are important. Just highlight a few points. try to understand the subject being discussed. A good starting place would be www.wikipedia.org
If your looking for medical information try the merck manual online.
Knowledge of a subject is a prerequisite to holding a discussion if it is going to be meaningful.
the reason you find yourself tongue tied could be your lack of awareness of the subject.
Once you have gained knowledge of the subject, you will better understand what people are talking about and can then try to include information that you had gathered during your own study.
Whenever you are not sure about what to say, wait, let others begin the topic, when you find that there is something that could be included try and include it into the discussion.
Dont be self conscious. Rather get yourself absorbed in the discussion, listen carefully what others have to say, and when the opportune moment comes up, your thoughts would automatically put words to your lips. Then there will be no stopping you.
The secret to being successful on a speech team is to be assertive, talk in a clear and precise way. Be sure what your talking about and ready to fend off questions on the topic. Dont focus on any single person, rather keep eye contact with a few people in the room, and dont face one person and talk for too long. You are not having a discussion with a single person, but rather with the team so look randomly at each person. If you find a certain person is distracting you in any way avoid his or her gaze.
Just dont worry what others have to say about you, or dont be afraid that someone will snub you or find fault with what you say. Thats all part of discussions. Descenting with another's opinions is okay. however if you are strong on your subject you could convince others of your view point.
The more you take part in these speech team events the more self confdent you will grow.
Best of luck and I would like to know how the speech meet went.
God Bless you!

The Bulldogs must be doing plenty extra useful. we've been hit difficult via injuries yet that would not maximum of our losses. plenty desires fixing, we're not taking part in as a collection and 2d section play in nonexistent and that's something we certainly ought to artwork directly to have a gamble at going everywhere this season. Our attack is only too predictable, Kimmorley has heavily have been given to think of of something different than bombing to Idris using fact it is not working. in the subsequent couple weeks we've the some very difficult communities, the Dragons, Panthers, typhoon and Tigers and if we win those video games or no longer relies upon on which group comes out, the gang that smashed the Roosters and Broncos or the gang that performed poorly against the infantrymen and the Rabbitohs.
