It would depend on what kind of speakers your grandpa bought. If the speakers that he bought were PC speakers, i.e. that it was powered small speakers that plug into the wall then you can connect it up to the headphone jack of most TVs.

I am assuming that the speakers are however unpowered and are regular speakers. In which case buying a mini-headphone jack to RCA would not help. The reason being that the speakers are not powered (they are not going to be amplified) and therefore will not be able to produce a good enough sound or you will not hear any sound at all. Therefore the only way to get this working would be to purchase a stereo receiver, that the speakers would plug into and that the receiver would have an amplifier to amp up the signal so that your grandpa can hear the sound.

Your question is a little unclear. Usually you can only connect speakers which use a so called phone-jack as a connection. (Like Speakers meant for Computers - Only very few High Class TV's have actual Speaker outputs.. (Grandpas usually don't have TV's of that sort)). You cannot connect regular speakers to a TV though. There are no adapters to connect real Speakers to a TV. Only ones which have a so called phone-jack also known as stereo-jack as a connection. If you have speakers on your tv that work fine then I don't see the problem.

I'm assuming the speakers have a stereo mini-plug (such that you'd see on speakers or earphones for hooking to an MP3 player). I'm assuming that TV has RCA jacks for audio OUTPUT (not input).

If this is the case, you can buy an adapter at Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc. that lets you convert from a male mini-plug to male RCA jacks.

Unless these are nice speakers, I don't see how they'll be much better than what's already in the TV.

No. PC speaker systems are quite different than the speakers typically used for TV's (home theater) It would be possible, but it would take so much work that it wouldn't be worth it.
