unless you are an authorized Patron of the NEX, you won't be able to get a set of Butter Bars for him, unless you can find a civilian jeweler who can make a set out of gold.

but what you may want to do is get him a few of the really nice silver dollars.. the first couple of times he is saluted as an Ensign, he is required to present the saluter with a silver dollar.

If you are looking for a "box" to place his first "gold bars" inside here are a few suggestions:

First: get authorized bars, available on line, etc some jewelers near bases have custom ones, real gold. But you may be just asking for a box that has such as the Navy crest, etc?

But the box:

1. Find an antique small compass box, case
2. A "sea shell" jewelry box
3. most custom jewelers have access to such as to make any presentation case customized.
4. a "scrimshaw" carved box (seafaring whalers)
5. a small wooden ship model

In any military town the local sports trophy shop will have such as plaques and more, a lot more, I know as seems I spent many "missions" getting something for a retirement or promotion event.

You did not say which branch. Try http://usmcshop.grunt.com
It is a Marine Corps site, they may have some generic display boxes.
