One of the greatest mysteries of our life is free will - God has made us, and has given us the freedom to do whatever we want, good or bad.
God respects this gift, and does not interfere in our lives. God will help us IF WE ASK HIM - but if we do something evil, it is not God's fault. If your child does a bad thing, it is not your fault.
God sent His Son, and men whipped him and beat him and killed him - and God did not interfere. It does not mean God does not love His Son. It does not mean God does not love us, when He does not stop bad men from doing bad things.
What happened to your friend was a dreadful thing, and if a panic room now makes him feel safer, why not. When people we love die, when truly awful things happen, we want to blame someone - and often enough, we want to blame God. Why did God not stop this? How could God let this happen?
WE make our world - the good and the evil. If our world is going to change, WE are the ones who have to take actions. We can hide in a room, like your friend wants to - or we can go out, and help the poor people, help the sick people, help the lonely people. If we ask Him, God will help us.
But in the final analysis, it is up to us.

I'm so sorry that this happened to your friend. I wish I knew why this had to happen, but I don't know. Your friend is going through terrible grief, and it's hard to imagine what kind of pain he must feel. I don't think we should criticize him for his reactions to this awful situation. If he feels there is no God now, it may just be a reaction of grief that he is having. And in a way, this is a compliment to God - because he is essentially saying that he thinks God is so good, that he would not let that happen. I think God is forgiving and will totally understand his feelings. He will forgive him for not believing. God just wants him comforted and to grow somehow through this experience. God is not so egotistical that the thing He cares about right now is whether this guy believes in Him or not.
Just be a friend to him, offer him comfort as much as you can, and be there for him. By doing so, maybe you can help him come to terms with the pain, and maybe belief in God will come. But this is not an issue you should force on him right now. Just give him comfort for his pain.

You can be a good friend just by being there and listening whenever he needs to talk.
You can also encourage him to seek out council from a Christian counselor when the time is right.
Losing a child is the worst nightmare on this earth. All the other on top of it has to be nearly unbearable. Pray for him and I will do the same.

I can answer where God was (seriously, bear with me):
The Holy Spirit is in Christians
Jesus is in Heaven in His new glorified body
God the Father is in Heaven too....
why didn't God do something? it'd be spiritually illegal. God needs 3 things in order to work on Earth in the lives of humans:
1) Human concent (yes I know, there's plenty of it)
2) the Faith of humans (there's not all that much nowadays)
3) sinlessness (that's kind of rare now adays)
so if these criteria aren't met, God would technically illegal on Earth.

When you talk to him, pray for wisdom, for God to show you how to talk to him. Sometimes it is just showing you're still his friend. Unfortunately people ignore God and don't listen to His angels/messengers there telling them not to do what they do. God was there and know how he feels and loves him. Trust in the Lord and don't doubt. He will show the way...Spend time in prayer and get back to a close relationship with the Lord and He will guide you.

Let me say a quiet prayer for their poor departed son, first!
Now, my friend, I hope that they reported it to the police and that the criminals will be apprehended soon and brought to justice.
True, when such things happen, one does tend to ask "Oh my Father! Why have you forsaken me?"
Remember that even Jesus asked that upon the Cross!
Why do such things happen? I don't know! All I can say is that it our duty to see that it is not repeated!
Why did not God send the Avenging Angel to save the innocent child? I don't know! But, let me say this, that they that have sinned so shall know no Peace. For that is the way of Nature. For they shall reap as they have sowed.
Take Strength in Jesus, my friend and advise your friend to do so, too!
For He is our Forever Friend and is always besides us, when we need Him most.
Pax vobiscum, pax dominic.

wow i'm really sorry....It is a delicate situation but sometimes God allows sufferings like that for the greater good of other people, who knows maybe all those sufferings if he would turn it up to God and still have faith in God then God would surely reward him greatly in the next life.

there's a phrase in the Bible.. "to those who are called" that means that there's a calling there. Wether or not he listens, sometimes isn't up to you. If he's meant to believe, he will, I'd say go to prayer for guidance, because I don't know that there's any better way to find those words.

I don't think I'd tell him God was anywhere near the place.
I don't think I'd feel much need to mention god at all to someone who has had to go through that.
