Some of my family members thinks that you only have to RSVP to a party (or anything with an invitation) if you are not going to make it. I firmly believe that anytime there is an RSVP requested that you should respond if you can make and if you can't. I think its rude not to respond either way. People need to know who much food and drinks need to be served or how many favors need to be prepared. Please provide supporting documentation in your answer as I am having a party this weekend and would like to print it out for those of my family members who show up and did not RSVP.

Actually it's taken from the French - Responde Si Vous Plait. Literal translation - Please respond. Some folks like to say it means "respond so very promptly".

So yes, if the invite says RSVP, you're supposed to! Otherwise the invite would say "Regrets only" meaning they expect you'll be there unless you tell them otherwise.

The answers above are correct, it means to respond whether you can or cannot make it, either way. One thing I wanted to add, since most people ask for RSVP to help plan their party, it also means to respond in a timely manner! Lots of times people will wait until the last moment and respond like one day before the party date.... and even be all hurt when you say something about it...'but I did reply didn't I?' The point is to reply before all the food orders/seating arrangements have been made!

RSVP is an abbreviation for the French word "Respondez S'il Vous Plait." In English, RSVP stands for "respond Please!" while you're sending a marriage invitation with an RSVP notation, you're asking your travelers to "respond Please" so as which you will plan accurately.

RSVP is French - Responez S'l Voux Plait which means Please Respond. So you must responde either way. Actually you should always ask for RSVP's if you want an answer either way. It is not rude not to respond if not asked to responde, but it is rude not to respond if asked.

It means to respond - either yes you are coming or no you are not coming... You may say RSVP regrets only - which means let me know if you are not coming. Otherwise, you need to respond either way.

Sometime ago a member named "Antigone" posted this answer - which was chosen as best - to exactly the same question:

repondez s'il vous plait
it's french and it means 'please reply'

I agree that this is the answer, and pass it on - but not as totally original to myself. Hope this helps.

It is a way of being courteous and letting your host know
if you plan on attending or not. It is a polite request for
your response.
