The elements of art are line, shape, color, texture, value, space, and form. The principles of design are unity, variety, emphasis, balance, proportion, pattern, and rhythm. You have to decide what you are trying to convey to the viewer before you decide which elements and principles to acentuate.

Texture-spacial concepts with the size and shape of the canvas or paper. Color and its meaning is esp. important- the emotional response.
