I'll explain a little more. I own a duplex which I rent out the top of while my husband and I live down stairs. The renters upstairs have been my friends for a long time and they needed an apartment so we rented to them for $535 a month. After a year we agreed to trade daycare for rent so I could go back to work full time. The "arangment" has gone from no cash exchanged to us paying their car insurance ($90/month) the water bill ($50/month), the hot water ($35/month), an extra $190 in cash per month along with the no rent income ($535/month). We also give them about $60 in random cash when they ask for help.
I provide the formula, diapers and wipes and she provides the food. The kids are upstairs from 11am to 5:30pm and she refuses to take them earlier even though if she did I could get a better schedual. I trust the woman and her son is the same age as my oldest. But there are also some serious disipline issues too. (My four year old now says bad words.) I need some advice

Call all the daycares in your area and find out what it would cost for you to take all 3 of your kids to the different daycares and compare them to the woman who is currently watching your children. According to what you've posted, you're paying $960 a month ($535 for rent, $90 for car insurance, $50 for water, $35 for hot water, extra $190, plus $60 when needed - I'm counting that per month) PLUS formula, diapers, and wipes. Ask the daycares in your area what they provide and do a cost comparison.

I live in Washington state. The average daycare out here is $550. That is with out state help or anything. As far as exchanging rent for daycare...that shouldn't be a problem...but honestly, I would say you are getting walked on. You shouldn't have to pay the utilities as well as car insurance...there is absolutely no need for that! I understand they are your friends, but there has to be a limit.
Call day cares around your area, if they are charging less than what you are giving your friends. I would ask your friends to start paying rent again, and you take the kids to another place.
If these people or their kids are being a bad influence on your children, it definitely needs to end. At all daycare facilities I have been to, they teach basic discipline (time outs, etc.) but never being mean. If your son is starting to say bad words and it started after he was going to your friends, chances are, they aren't being respectful of the kids' ages. When children are young, they are the most impressionable. If your son says a bad word and you tell him not to say it, he'll possibly wonder why it's OK if he says it in one place, and not another, or if other people can say it, why can't he.

Hope this helps.Take care and good luck

You could probably get a better deal by enrolling all three children in the same daycare. They typically give a price break. I would think it would be a cheaper and the hours would be better. Check the closest YMCA (they even provide meals for the toddlers) Even if daycare cost 900 a month, you still would be receiving the 535 a month for rent.

Well in Wisconsin the cost for childcare for children under 2 is about 250 a week and about 150 for a 5 year old. So you'd be paying about 650 a week for 3 kids. However they provide transportation and snacks/juice. Your getting a good deal but they are taking advantage of you. Once agreed, they should have talked you about an increase. It's time to sit down and have a good discussion with her. On top of that if she is providing a service for you, she should become licensed. And you would get credited for what you're paying and she would have to claim that instead of getting a free ride.

Good Luck

Bad arrangement. Find another daycare provider and go back to charging a fair rent. You may lose a friendship over it but life's a b**ch. You're spending about what it would cost to have a 7-6, full time daycare provider. If you want to keep the convenience pay her a fair rate based on local prices for times and give them their bills back. This is bad for a friendship and bad business as a property owner regardless of the relationship.

I have my two kids (9 months and 4 years) in daycare two full days per week, about 18 hours per week, and I pay $812 per month. I also am required to provide my own formula, diapers and wipes, and my daycare provides the older one's food. I live in a medium-sized city in North Carolina. I have been told our daycare rates are high for the general region, but they are right-on for our city.

I'd say the larger issue isn't the money but the quality of care.

you should def call around daycare centers in your area, but where i live (houston) i think that this arrangement is pretty fair. I worked at a daycare and for the 4 yr old and the 2 yr old it would have been $75 a week for each of them and for the baby somewhere between $100 and $125 a week (depends on if he can walk or not) so that would give you a monthly total of at least $1,000 a month.
