Thanks to all who have answered so far...

The problem does not appear to be with autocorrect or language settings, which is too bad because that would have been easy to fix.

It seems to happen randomly as I'm typing a document. After a while, the punctuation will stop working and flip to the accented letters and other symbols.

Sometimes closing and re-opening word solves the problem, sometimes it doesn't.

Venky is right. First check your Tools>Auto Correct and make sure that no one has added these entries.

It is possible someone changed your language setting. From the Windows Start Menu Select Programs>Microsoft Office Tools>MS Office Lanaguage Settings. Make sure English (preferred version) is selected and also make sure that any Language scripts are disabled.

Check up whether anybody has included these things in the "Autocorrect" options. ie, when you enter ", by autocorrect feature it changes to E and so on. It can be checked by clicking view- toolbars-autotext , clicking on the autocorrect tab and then going through the list of autocorrect entries ! This may help !
