When my cats purr, I'm not sure who is happier, them, or me. The purr comes from two membrane folds called "false" vocal cords, that are situated in the larynx behind the actual vocal cords. Cats purr at 26 cycles per second,the same as an idling diesel engine! The cat will purr when she breaths in, and when she breathes out. Scientists think purring is produced by blood in a large vein in the chest cavity that vibrates and is then magnified by air in the windpipe. Cute little happy kitties...

Mainly because they're very happy and content. However, on rare occasions, a cat will sometimes purr when they're in a great deal of pain. Then it becomes a sort of calming agent for them.

Cats purr when happy or satisfied, its their way of smiling, or just the same as a dog wagging it's tail.
