There are a variety of side-bets, but it sounds like you are asking for the basic game--pass or no pass.
If the shooter rolls 7 or 11 on the first roll, he wins (the pass line pays). If he gets a 2, 3, or 12, he loses. If he gets any other number, that number is the 'point', and gets marked by the house. Then the shooter keeps rolling until he either gets his point and wins, or gets a 7 and loses.
If you ever lose as the shooter, you pass the dice to the next shooter. If you win, you get to shoot again.

If its a personal game there are many different types of rules, but if your talking about vegas craps, its seven on the first roll, OR repeating the number you first rolled before you roll a seven. 7 first win, 7 secound or later lose. Also, if its vegas rules you win by betting correctly, you can beat that you will lose, roll seven secound or later, or bet you will win, the original number. Also you can beat many different ways, you can beat that you will roll a five six eight three, many different ways, if you look at a craps table it pretty much explains itself. For a home game usually you just go by the 7 rule, 7 first win 7 secound or later BEFORE you roll your original roll you lose. Some people add more rules like if you roll a eleven you lose or snake eyes, it depends on the players, but all crap games use the seven rull.

On the first roll (called the "come out"), you need to roll a 7 or 11 to win. If you roll a 2,3, or 12 you lose. Any other number is called your "point". You keep rolling until you "make your point" and win or roll a 7 and lose.
