Hi, I have a 3 year old boy. Everytime I take him to a social outing or class with other children the other mother's seem to ignore me. I am extremely friendly and outgoing. Is it because I'm not married, have tattoo's, and a septum piercing? I know I look different and most of the mothers are married. Is this the reason why I am being shunned? I know I am not being paranoid or sending vibes at all. I open myself up completely. Can anyone please tell me what's going on? Thank you.

It is possible a couple of moms went together to the class to see each other and are not really there to socialize. Of course, it is also possible they are scared of you or wonder if they would have anything in common with you.

Are there other places you could visit Mom/kid classes? Check the YMCA or community centers. See if there are first time free offers, so you can participate before committing. Look for people who look more accepting of you rather than a bunch of Stepford Wives types.

Sadly, this is probably the reason why you are being outcasted. That's terrible. Continue the kindness, but don't kill yourself in your efforts. You are friendly, outgoing and they are missing out on a wonderful person and friendship for their children. Maybe you could try and find a playgroup in your area with people who are like you with piercings or tattoos, or, start your own playgroup for single parents. Find something you can enjoy just as much as your child.

Now a days yes your looks and not being married could have a thing to do with it. As bad as that sound. I hate that most people have become like this. I am a single mom and alot of the times I get that to from other people.

If you were in Phoenix, I would invite you to our mothers' group. It's just a casual play group with kids ages 3 months to almost 5 years. It's a very easy going group. I've never seen anyone left out.

If you can't find a group for you. Try starting one of your own. I'm sure there are others living near you that could use another option when it comes to mothers' groups.

Please don't worry about other people ,they are obviously not there for their kids but to sit and gossip.Have fun with your boy and just ignore the others! If they had great lives the last thing they would be doing is judging someone b/c they have tattoos.Oh how they wish they looked like you!

Try taking the piercing out. You got it so you'd stand out but now you're experiencing the negative side of it.

Also see if there's another mom who's not part of the clique, and buddy up to her.

Cliques don't end in highschool. I would continue "killing them with kindness" and know that your friendship is worth having and if their noses are too high in the air to realize that, they are the ones missing out.

As mature as you'd think adults should be, this is likely the reason for the way that you are being treated.
