Let us look at the situation scientifically and a bit sensibly as well !

1) You are confined to a closed room at night (I presume it is night in your question, even though you are not clear about it),

In this situation both of you will be using the available Oxygen in the room. So to that extend you will be cutting off each other's oxygen no doubt.

2) You are confined to the same room at night with a potted plant or two.( Large trees are impossible here.)

In this situation both of you (Plant/s and you) will be using Oxygen available in the room.( Remember very well that plants respire continuously and use oxygen continuously).

So the plant/s will cut off your oxygen surely as you feared in the question.

But you need not be alarmed as the amount of the gas they use is negligible and you will be none the worse for it.
You can have a sound sleep.(Unless the room is chock-a-block with plants)

Plants take in carbon dioxide ONLY during day time/in the presence of light and give off oxygen.

During the night this does NOT occur ; only respiration / breathing continues non stop.

plants need light to photosynthesise, and so it's only during the day that they turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. they do also respirate (turn oxygen into carbon dioxide), which goes on during the day and night. but they produce more oxygen than carbon dioxide overall so no need to worry.

is it true that sleeping with another person in your room will cut off your oxygen supply? people breathe a lot more than pot plants. also, they're more likely to roll over and suffocate you:p

How would that be possible? Plants give off oxygen, if anything it will increase the oxygen supply in the room.

Plants "breath" CO2 and "exhale" O2. Humans breath O2 and exhale CO2. We would therefore supply CO2 for the plants and they supply O2 for us. The statement that plants in the room cuts off O2 is therefore false. In fact the opposite is more likely true.

No far from it. Plants actually take in the stuff you breath out...carbon dioxide...and filter it to make the air breathable again...that's why we need the rainforests because they are the lungs of the planet!
