People are so rude when it comes to religion because everyone feels strongly about their beliefs one way or the other therefore we get defensive when someone challenges those beliefs.
Stereotypes are, unfortunately, a sociological mind-frame which society has put into our heads beginning at a very young age. Most people do not overcome those stereotypes because we see them everyday. There are those of us who like to be informed and research the truth about other religions instead of assuming that the media and televangelists (sp?) are all-knowing.
Not all Christians are good people but not all Christians are hypocrites.
Not all Satanists are evil.
Wiccans do not worship or even believe in the devil.
Not all atheists and/or agnostics are immoral or non-spiritual.
These are all truths but not common knowledge. I doubt this society will ever overcome stereotypes. It's up to those of us who are informed to spread the truth as best we can.

People who are ignorant and feel that their self-concept and ideas are superior to everyone else's tend to cling to such a self-concept (ego) very tightly. Because we all just want to be "happy" at the core of our being, if anything challenges that happiness and glee with our own self-concept, we get nasty about it or put our heads in the sand... some even plug their ears and scream "lalalalalaaa I'm not listening".
Edit/addition: When I talk about something causing "harm" and "suffering" I don't just mean the perceived harm, viewed by our wounded egos either, it means about actual abuse and psychological HARM that can be caused by hate activity, like war, mental and physical abuse, murder, etc. "Retaliation" just because someone has "offended" our concepts isn't exactly the best behavior... because it only perpetuates the anger and "war".
You can only try to educate so far, and then the rest you just have to let go. When their attitude starts to generate hate, harm and suffering, then, of course, it's time to pull their "plug". The rest of the time you just gotta breathe... and I'm right there with you... focused on just breathing.

Funny, I am a Christian and I actually know that Satanists do not actually worship the Devil (they dont even believe in the devil). I knowhat there are plenty of non-believers who are good people and not all Christians are good people.
Sometimes I wish SOME non-believers might actually realize I do have a brain.

Thank GOD we live in AMERICA to believe as we want! If people are so upset over ether's beliefs, maybe they should try a different country that doesn't allow freedom of speech and/or religion. Maybe then they'd learn to keep their mouths shut if they can't say something nice. I love the diversity in America. I feel free to practice whatever religion I want, and wouldn't change it for any other supressed ideations.

The one thing in the world thats sure to cause a fight, is religion.
As for why they think we worship the devil, its because they're told by the bible that we do. The only thing we can do is try to educate them so they don't wallow in their ignorance, but they'll probably deny anything we say, or ignore it, anyway.

It's because some people don't bother to learn about different things. It's easier for them to assume certain things. Plus they are taught a certain way and that's all they know.

it's ultimately an emotional position, all you can do is get emotional when it is threatened.
if it was a reasoned out position, a debate would be most valuable, because that is precisely how you reason.

As a rule, I leave people alone to let them worship whatever they want, without bias or prejudice.
It's only when other people insult me or Islam that I then retaliate.
