Lack of personal motivation.
As you know, most of the people in the US who call themselves Christians are more like 'unthesists'. They are not 'atheists'- 'without or against theism', they simply basically ignore God unless it is convenient or socially proper to acknowledge Him.
Their Bibles are unopened, their church attendence is spotty at best, if they pray at meals or bedtime it is a ritual.
Setting aside these 'sheep', we still have a group of believers whose knowledge of the Bible is weak at best. I blame the churches for this. Too many churches 'spoon feed' the flocks- "believe what I am telling you, accept the weak links I am making between unrelated topics. We are basing this on years of saying the same foolishness over and over, making it more true each time."
I think another part is the whole relationship people now have with God and the Bible. They seem to think that knowing one well somehow means they automatically know the other. They put all kinds of barriers in place to make the whole thing harder and more confusing- thinking that the Bible is deeper or harder to understand than it really is, poor translations, lack of helps, trying to set up elaborate schedules (which fail and generate guilt)...
There is a certain sense of smugness and pride working here as well. "Don't confuse me with facts, my mind is made up". I have seen MANY Christians who are SURE they KNOW what the Bible says about some topic or another. They are sure their understanding of tongues, the rapture, baptism, the Sabbath, salvation, etc. is the right one.
In my experience, reading the Bible is easy enough. getting rid of the baggage you bring to it is the hard part!
What I tell people is to get a Bible on tape or CD. LISTENING to whole sections at once shows a totally different flavor than slogging through a verse at a time does. Different emphasises, different focuses float to the top- responsibility, love, serving one another, etc. dominate the New Testament when you go this route. It is pretty cool!

First of all not everyone owns a computer or if they do they all can't afford to get on the internet. However, many Christians are not fully aware of their faith and are not taking the time to read and learn all there is to know. They think they do and there are the few that are totally indoctrinated that knock on your door but even they don't have all the history, and background to their own faith its all the surface stuff. Why?
I guess cause they don't think its important enough to bother with.. sad but true.
For more on the Catholic faith go to www.newadvent.org. Yes, Catholics do read their Bible but in the old days they were very large and very expensive. My Grandparents couldn't afford one let alone my folks I asked for one when I was 10 years old for my birthday. My Mom saved for months to get it for me too!

That is a very good point. We Christians should know it word for word. It is a very complex book, and I could read it from front to back and probably not get all of it. I believe whole heartedly that it has to be read with humble spirit and in prayer to fully grasp what God is saying in all the scriptures. That is why a lot of Christians say that people who read it with a mocking spirit or to find things that just "contradict" are not reading it with prayer or a "want" for knowledge of it.

Well I grew up in a Catholic household, and practiced Catholicism for about 15 years. Not once in that entire time did someone tell me I HAD to read the Bible.

I'm surprised that anyone knowledgeable of the bible would still be ignorant enough to be christian.
