Go to the gym before your evening meal

I wouldnt go the gym after your evening meal, not because you may be sick, but because it takes approximately 8 hours for the food to absorbed into the body. So if you go to the gym the following morning you will be burning off that meal you had the night before.

Heavy exercises just after a meal is dangerous, as is swimming.
Eat earlier in the day or after the gym with a lighter meal.

There isn't really a right or wrong answer to this; it just depends on how you feel. The 50/50 rule is generally a good one - especially if you're lifting weights. if you're doing cardio, you should probably just stick with a small bowl of carbs or a banana an hour before you hit the gym.

Personally, I would cut that meal in half and eat 50% before you go and 50% afterwards. You want to be sure you have something in your stomach but not be too full. If you can manage it, plan on eating "lighter" on those days (steamed brown rice, mixed salad, lean meat).
