If it's about saving energy, no matter what time you go in the lights are on at the office/place of employment for the same amount of time. If it is to benefit farmers, how about just getting up a little later/earlier. I never really understood the logic.

As has been stated, it is about energy. We are asleep and awake based mostly on clocks, and not the sun. Shifting those clocks such that the normal hours people are awake are in tune with the hours the sun is shining helps save energy.

Our use of energy is a necessity. On a macro-economics scale, when people spend less on energy, there is more money available for them to do useful and productive things with. Changint the clocks adversely effects (slightly) the power generation industry (coal shipments etc.) but the negative effects are both minimal and predictable (so the industry doesn't suffer some huge over supply of workers and not enough work). The good that the extra money does in people's wallets (that they didn't spend on energy) helps fuel an economy more than spending on energy alone.
