A lot of people have come up with the same answer, and I'll say it again. Execution in that part of the world, at that point in done was done by crucifiction. A cross wasn't a big deal as far as religious symbology goes until Christ was killed this way.

That was the Roman custom at the time. What most people don't know is that they usually just tied the pepole to the cross, and often they would supply a small stand for them so that they could ease their suffering just a bit. What this accomplished was allowing the people on the cross to live longer, thereby increasing their humiliation. It was as much to shame them as to kill them. after a few days, the Romans would break their legs so they could'nt support themselves and more and they would soon suffocate.

If you are asking why Jesus was killed in that fashion, the Romans used crucifixion as their form of execution for crimes against the state.
If you are asking why Jesus allowed Himself to be crucified, it's because He took upon Himself our punishment so that we could be reunited with God (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and live eternally with Him.

This was the most humiliating way to execute someone back in the day, and the most painful.
No food, no water, you held yourself up with arm strength and when you tired, you couldn't breathe. His legs weren't nailed straight so he could hold himself up comfortably...A lot of thought was put in to amplifying this suffering of the condemned. You could live like this for days.
No one know the depth of evil in a human heart, just look around.

Galatians 3:13 , "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written: Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree." (Deut 21:23)
Christ obeyed the Law Covenant perfectly and thereby gained the right to life by works of law. However, God had added the law in Leviticus for the sake of making Christ a curse for our sakes. Thus Christ sacrificed his human life, blood and flesh, for our sakes. Because of being sinless, he had not forfeited his right to his life as a heavenly being which he was before being born a human.
In this way, when he was resurrected, he was resurrected with a heavenly spirit body (1 Cor chapter 15) and was thus able to always stand before God when a Christian sins and ask for that one to be forgiven that one's sins based on Christ's sacrifice.
However, because he did have the right to human life, and didn't forfeit this right, he had the right to offspring!
God then permits Christ to adopt all those who have faith so that they become Christ's earthly children, and he becomes their father. It is in this fashion that the ransom works to deliver us from Adamitic sin!
See the scriptures in the box.

I think some are missing your question. I think you are asking for what was the crime he was accused of that gave him the death penalty. the official reason by Rome was treason & rebelion against Ceasar & the Roman empire. Jesus told others to worship God. The Romans thought that Ceasar was to be worshiped & that Jesus was inciting others to revolt against him.

It was actually the method of execution at the time, it was a slow and painful death, where you actually suffocated rather than bleed to death like I used to think. Your weight literally restricts your breathing, like being pressed in Salem sorta.
Also, when they crucified someone, they could leave them there for long periods of time as reminders that they meant business.

That was the standard method of execution when they wanted to drive home a point. A very slow agonizing death. The root word of "excrutiating" comes from the latin word meaning crucifiction.

Because it was the common punishment in the roman right to criminals, and because Christ was charged with the crime of not paying taxes and inciting people to disobey the Ceasar, he "deserved" the death penalty, even though Pilate didn´t wanted to punish him like that.

That was the Roman custom. For the salvation of sinners and the forgiveness of sins of all time and to open the gates of heaven.
