In late August 2005, the Phoenix Police Department began conducting a broad investigation into distribution of the drug Ecstasy. Police search patterns included many neighborhoods in close proximity to the local university. The department was able to ascertain a description of potential Ecstasy distributors from what it considered a reliable source.
Officers Kevin Sedwick and Todd Melbourne were on patrol through the streets of north Phoenix when they spotted two college-age males walk into a pizzeria fitting the source’s description of the potential Ecstasy distributors. The officers entered the parking lot and witnessed these two men speaking to an older man behind the counter. An exchange of unknown items took place, and the two men immediately left the restaurant. They returned to their vehicle, left the parking lot and drove west on Sugar Hill Drive.
Sedwick and Melbourne followed the vehicle north on States Road to the Sunset End Motel, just south of the 202 Freeway. The officers drove into the motel parking lot and witnessed the two men from pizzeria knock on Room 126. The door opened and the two men walked inside.
Officers Sedwick and Melbourne approached Room 126, knocked on the door and announced their presence. Behind the door, the officers heard what they later described as a “rustling” noise. A female, later identified as a student of the university and renter of Room 126, opened the door. With her consent, the officers entered the room. They heard a toilet flush and witnessed the two men exit the bathroom, nervous with pale faces. The officers again noted they fit the description of the potential Ecstasy distributors. Officer Melbourne walked into the bathroom and observed several pills on the floor around the toilet. The men were arrested.
Four baggies of Ecstasy pills, later retrieved from a thorough search of the bathroom plumbing, were used as evidence against the men.

The reason I ask if there is abandonment is that is what I have to write a report on, was there abandonment or not, I didn't think so after reading this I just wanted to confirm what I thought before writting my report.

I agree with everyone else. It sounds like a solid arrest. As far as abandonment, are you referring to the fact that the pills were found on the floor and in the plumbing and not on the person of either of the two males? If so, the issue is not abandonment as much as probable cause of possession. A defense attorney might try to make the case that the two males had nothing to do with the pills but the rest of the evidence and observations prove otherwise.

It sounds like good police work to me. How would abandonment fit in to this?

I don't know why you would say this is "abandonment".....I would consider it smart police work and catching the deadbeat loser drug sellers and users.
