I am a generally healthy white 41-year-old female with a pretty poor diet due to trying to keep my weight down. My boyfriend is a healthy white 56-year-old male who had bladder cancer a couple of years ago, but has since recovered. He does smoke, but is currently trying to quit. His diet is fairly good, but could be better.

Anyway, my question is this..............

We are both very interested in a healthy diet and we would like to make whatever changes are needed to bring about optimum health. What kind of diet do we consider? Where can I find additional information on the diet, like recipes, shopping lists, etc..?

Cut out red meat- it will probably be the best decision you've ever made.

I'm not on any particular diet- just try to eat more fish and vegetables. And cut out the sweets as much as possible. The key is to eat small portions but eat often. Munch on carrot sticks instead of chips. And make sure you eat breakfast! Even if it's a small bowl of cereal- it will hold you over longer in the afternoon. Epicurious.com has good recipes. Also, Gortons.com has good recipes for fish (even if you don't use their product, you can substitute another.)

Try not to make any really drastic changes because you probably won't stick with it. Take the diet you have and make a few healthy tweaks for whatever works for you.

I've followed those fad diets, and not until recently when my bf had really bad chest pains (found out it was REALLY BAD acid reflux) did we start following the gerd diet. It still has us eating healthy and we've both shed some weight with it. I feel completely healthy inside and out and pretty much, we have our 3 meals and snacks in between and eat 2-3 hrs prior to going to bed. And it's normal food we're eating, just less of the things that put your stomach through it's own workout. So yes, if you know your diet's unhealthy, do try this, and you'll also be helping out your heart and digestive system! I've attached 2 sites that helped me as guidelines when I started. Good luck!

I suggest that you try body cleansing. I tried it and really got lean quickly. I lost 15 pounds in 9 days and also 3 inches off my waist. I do body sculpting so getting leaner was my goal. My sister did this program too and she lost a lot of weight quickly. I did not know too much about cleansing but there are a lot of TV commercials about this stuff. This is a body cleanse and not just a colon cleanse, I wanted my body to get lean quickly and this did the trick! My suggestion would be to check into the Weight Watcher's program. It is balanced and it doesn't resrtict you from eating anything. It's based on a point system. I lost 65 lbs 4 yrs ago and have managed to keep it all off. It's the only diet I have never felt deprived on. The first thing to do tho, would be to stop smoking!
