Any examples of armies that were either destroyed or decimated by nature or some of the problems of large scale assault (ie hurricanies, lack of food, diseases, still gathering forces when attacked)?

Off the top of my head - read up on Napoleons campaign in Russia.

Van Creveld wrote a book called 'Supplying War' that should answer your questions.

First thing that came to mind for me was The Continental Army during The Revolutionary War. They weren't destroyed or decimated, but they were weakened by hunger and freezing temperatures.

I think it was Alexander who had to go back becasue of the severe cold conditions.

Even Napolean had the same problem near Russia.
I am not 100% sure.
