Depends on where in Britain you mean.

In England it will be either French or Spanish.
In Scotland it will probably Gaelic, or the same as England.
In Wales most learn Welsh as either a first or a second language by law, then followed by French and Spanish.

Was always French. But more schools are teaching German and Spanish now.
I think that amongst the British people who have a second language, then French is still the most popular.

For a long time now British school pupils have learnt French, with some children also studying German. More recently, a more varied selection of languages have become available for children to choose, showing that the British DfES now recognises the importance of countries such as China.

French followed by German the main languages in Europe along with English. Spanish is often seen as a wasted option.

French and German was the most common taught in schools when i was there but i think Spanish is becoming popular now too.
