i have been working at the same daycare for about 3 years now, i havent got a raise in forever, and i make the same as anyone. well my daughter has been sick lately, she also goes to the daycare i work at, and i have missed 2 days last week to stay home with her because she was really sick, and then friday i get ready to leave for work and my car wont start, i couldnt get a ride in to work until 10 but i called and explained to my boss, then over the weekend when i thought my car was fixed it wouldnt start yesterday, so it is being fixed right now, i didnt have a way to get to work so i called in, i called in kind of late because i was up late with my daughter, my boss son, not my boss, her son who works there and is considered "in charge" answers and starts yelling at me, saying i miss all this work and i miss every other day and i explain to him about my car and he is like if u are a minute late, and i mean just a minute, dont come in,
does this sound fair to you????

No that don't sound fair but it happens that way!!! People don't like people to be late for nothing! I also think that you should talk to your boss and tell her the story not her son!! Who cares what he said he ain't your boss!

In essence yes it is fair. It is not up to your boss to get you to work on time. It is a cruel situation I know, however your boss can expect you to work these kinds of problems out on your own. That is why you are paid to attend work in the first place, it is assumed your commitment is contractual, dry and without emotion.

My suggestion is to look around your community for resources that could potentially provide you with a bus ticket or car pool in the interim. Church groups often help out in situations like this, and maybe even a community based outreach program.

It is not fair that women have to be so resourceful in order to work. I think staying home when you or your family is sick is a responsible decision especially if you work at a daycare since germs should be kept down to a minimum however when your car broke down that is when you should have found help outside of the workplace to remain true to your contract.

I don't like community resources as a rule.

They perpetuate the very situation your stuck in now. If community resources did not exist then at some point it would be necessary for families to have a real and equatable salary in order to live with a decent quality of life.

Community resources accomodate substandard salaries.

Until communities resolve substandard manipulations such as these your stuck, and that situation cannot be blamed on one substandard boss but many internationally.

Well, while you may have real reasons for being late, most bosses hate sickness/lateness. Especially from the same person, more than once in a great while. By calling in sick, being late, you are calling negative attention to yourself.

There are lots of daycares out there, so look for another job. Maybe God is opening the proverbial window.

But if youre boss is dealing with you this way, it's his way of saying you are not good enough (above and beyond the job duties) at your job to keep you though you are late or sick often. Make yourself VALUABLE at your job, so that if you are late or sick, they can't imagine filling your shoes.

If you just float by and are a warm body, and then not even that due to sick or late, then be prepared to be treated as such. kwim?

Of course it isn't. Being a mom is exactly this kind of struggle. You have a lot of people relying on you and that's why, when you're in a posistion like that, you need to explain that you will not be coming to work there anymore. They are NOT doing you a favor "letting" you work there. It's hard to find people who can be trusted ny the parents and children. It's a huge loss to the business if they suddeny no longer have "Miss. Whatever" coming. They won't find someone to replace you very quickly and since I'm sure they offer no benefits you should tell them you have found another position that pays more. Hold your ground, don't let people talk to you like that. Screw them it's their loss. Too bad for the kids though. : (

No it doesn't sound fair. The business owner enriches himself by impoverishing his workforce, then blames that workforce for not having two brand new cars at their disposal. And anyone who has ever taken public transportation knows what a nightmare that is.

We need a worker's revolution. The working class needs to take over government and major industry and run those entites for the good of the people. Such a system is called socialism.

Here's another story of a similiar nature:

It doesn't sound fair but it's called GROWN UP....your a mother and a worker...you need to get your life in order and figure other things out....you should always have a back up sitter in case your daughter is sick....and if your problem is that you don't like other people to watch your child maybe you should open your own center in your home you can have up to 4 or 5 kids including your own depending on the state you live in.

Talk with your "real boss" and being that this is a daycare, they should know children get sick and you were being courteous enough to not bring your child and spread it around. S**t happens, cars break down. Good Luck......

He sounds like a total horses A*S, and no, it's not fair. If you have been there for three years, you have more than proven yourself and maybe you should try to find work at another daycare? Is that possible?

The boss sounds like a jerk. But honestly he is running a business. And if he can't depend on you what is he supposed to do. Put yourself in his shoes. It is understandable about your kid and the car trouble. But a business is a business. They need people they can count on.
