I am having a dental procedure done on March 20th. Because I'm terrified of the dentist, they suggested using Triazolam to relax me. There is a good chance I may be pregnant. Is Triazolam safe to take until I find out?

I'm a dentist.

Absolutely not! Halcion (triazolam) is not safe to take during pregnancy. Do not take that medication until you are certain you are not pregnant.

All medications are given a pregnancy risk designation:

A-proven safe in human studies. No drugs have been "proven safe".

B-presumed to be safe based on animal studies.

C-no evidence either way to say safe or unsafe.

D-unsafe, but may still be used in certain circumstances

X-very unsafe, and use of drug is never justified during pregnancy.

Halcion (triazolam) is designated as "X".

A MESSAGE FOR ALL OF YOU READING THIS:

Always tell your dentist absolutely everything you know about your health history. Your mouth, being a part of your body, is like any other part of your body. Your health history is every bit as relevant to our work as it is to a physian's.

Then you better find out if you are pregnant BEFORE you take anything. That's such an easy answer.

Halcion/Triazolam:
"Triazolam is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that it is known to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Do not take triazolam if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment."

It's NOT safe to take triazolam or diazepam (valium); both belong to the benzodiazepine category, and can likely cause harm to the fetus.

Generally it's best to avoid elective dental procedures during 1st and 3rd trimester. If you're nervous and pregnant, try a transdermal buspar patch.

According to this website, it states that this has been known to cause birth defects (look under contraindications).

Here is another site that states it should not be taken during pregnancy.

Your best bet, put off this dental procedure until you find out if you are pregnant or not. I wish you the best of luck.

The best thing to do is call any local 24 hour pharmacy. Ask to speak with the pharmacist only and ask him/her. A pharmacist knows MORE about drugs than anyone and they can tell you the drug facts on that drug.
