I'm visiting soon and would like to know some good cheap eats on the west side around 77th street in NYC. Within 3 or 4 blocks would be good. Thanks!

Cafe Con Leche - a Domincan restaurant - I love the mofungo, mango batido, the garlic shrimp, their flan is excellent.

One of New York's best bargains: Gray's Papaya on the corner of 72nd and Broadway - $2.99 for two excellent hot dogs and a fresh tropical juice (no seating - you eat standing at a counter looking out on Broadway)

Big Nick's on Broadway and 77th - serves everything - pizza, burgers, eggs, steaks, Greek dishes - they must have 200 things on the menu (very well known and very inexpensive)

Dallas BBQ on 72nd and Broadway

La Caridad on Broadway and 78th - Cuban/Chinese - very famous - mentioned on Seinfeld several episodes (I never saw the attraction here, but it's very inexpensive and very crowded)

Ottomanelli on Amsterdam and 79th - good sandwiches

EJ's Luncheonette on Amsterdam and 81st

Ray's Pizza on Amsterdam and 82nd

Funky Diner on Columbus and 82nd - good crepes and excellent gelatto

Ollie's Noodle on Broadway and 84th (delicious scallion pancakes - excellent priced lunch)

VYNL Columbus and 84th - good pad thai, wraps, eggs

And you have got to get something to take out from Zabar's on Broadway and 80th - this is a great store!

Drawing a blank on that part of town, there's a place Nice Matin, corner of Amserdam and 79th. Up further Ouest, but in the 80's, but incredible food, make reservations well in advance. Not cheap. There is a restaurant I pass called Citrus that looks interesting. Check out Zagats for the best info. they will have it listed by area and will give you an idea of cost. Sorry, but live further up and don't know too many cheap eats. Oh, there is a place French Toast on 86th that is supposed to be great, and Popover Cafe, which is great for brunch, but again,, in the 80's.
